Santa Cruz Basilica is one of the most beautiful and historically significant churches in Kerala, located in the heart of Fort Kochi. This magnificent basilica is famous for its Portuguese heritage, stunning architecture, artistic interiors, religious importance, and centuries-old history.
Recognised as one of the eight Basilicas in India, Santa Cruz Basilica is an important pilgrimage centre and a major attraction in the Fort Kochi heritage circuit. It represents the rich cultural connections between Kerala and European colonial powers.
The history of Santa Cruz Basilica dates back to the arrival of the Portuguese on the Malabar Coast.
In 1505, the first Portuguese Viceroy Dom Francisco de Almeida received permission from the King of Cochin to build a church in Kochi. The foundation stone was laid on 3 May 1505, the feast day of the Holy Cross, and the church was named Santa Cruz (Holy Cross).
In 1558, the church was elevated to the status of a cathedral by Pope Paul IV. During the Dutch conquest of Kochi in 1663, many Catholic structures were destroyed, but Santa Cruz Cathedral survived for a period. Later, during British rule, the old structure was damaged and the present basilica was reconstructed.
In 1984, Pope John Paul II elevated Santa Cruz Cathedral to the status of a Basilica, recognising its historical, artistic, and religious importance.
Santa Cruz Basilica is a wonderful example of European architectural influence blended with Indian artistic traditions.
